How much drinking do YOU think is excessive? What do you think borders on alcoholism? I drink probably every weekend. Ok, I lie, every weekend. Sometimes I have a few drinks during the week. Not all crazy drunk, just to chill out or sometimes my guy comes home and we have a drink before dinner. Is that too much? I know a couple peeps on this board share (sorta) my idea of drinking. Do you think its too much? Post away! WEEEEE |

I think its excessive when you're drinking for no reason, if you know what i mean. I have a friend whos 19, and he gets blind drunk every weekend with his girlfriend and friends. Thats fine. But during the week if he has nothing to do he will sit by himself and drink basically an entire bottle of vodka. Or if it's a Friday and he isn't going out he feels that its necessary for him to get completely smashed alone in his room. To me, thats excessive. |

I used to get plastered by myself playing video games, I'd falling asleep with the remote in my hand. I'd wake up from Tomb Raider to find Lara Croft just standing there waiting. |

Oh gawd, now that is fine way to wake up !!! ^ Aww Julesy didnt come straight out n' say Im the same as her *HIGH 5* b*yatch :drinks Ok I reckon those even that just drink one night a week that end up violently ill That was excessive !!! For those that drink n' drink Doesnt effect their careers, relationships, character I reckon it isnt excessive drinkin' Hardly drink alone but do every now n' then. I dont sit there thinkin' oooh ooh lets get wasted. I just have a few, then if a friend rocks up, hello more drinks lol Dont drink everytime Im being social. But yah Im definately a big drinker. No one has ever gone off at me over it so guess everyone agrees it aint a problemo. My friend Maya cant drink at all anymore, her body just wont take it Oii does she get super sick the next day Her vomit is like a missile KA POW She'd like to drink occasionally but no can do, she cant. |

I am a fairly heavy drinker I suppose, or I am a refined heavy drinker. When I don't have a reason to be up, I usually go out to the clubs and the bars 6 or 7 days a week. There were times in England where I realised I hadn't spent a night at home in over 3 weeks. But it wasn't going out to get drunk that was just part of the bigger experience. Even so, by the end I was drinking a at least a half a bottle of jack and several pints and going home reasonably sober haha. Now at school I probably get drunk 2-3 nights a week, sometimes chilling at my flat with ppl sometimes going out, I tend to go crazier when I go out. I probably have a beer almost every day and some days I"ll have 3 just to relax. But when it takes 6 or 7 to feel drunkish I don't feel that 3 is bad. I think you drink too much when you are drinking to get drunk by yourself several times a week. Or if you are drinking to the point where its affecting your life. Yeah, there are days where I didn't go to class or work because I was too hungover, but if you find it happening weekly, or that you try to take a day off from drinking and can't thats when you know you have a problem |

Thanks Hunt! I knew you would be on my team! :kizzzzzz Si! Nothing wrong there either Kelly! As long as you get your studies on. Ok, next subject is:::::*drumroll......* Do you think its a "learned thing"? I admit, both my parents drank and smoked (ciggies) Do you think you become "immune" to the effects or the reality of it? That it becomes the "norm"? Coming from a Hispanic family...its pretty much the protocol. My guy has a thing with drinking heaps cause his dad was an alchie and ended his life.So he stays away. Post your thoughts. |

Yes and no. My dad smoked, a lot. I started smoking when I was 12 or 13 because he was leaving us and I wanted to feel closer to him. Do I keep smoking because of that ? No. But I never would have started without it Drinking, no. My dad was an alcholic but I didn't know that. I didn't know until after I started drinking. My mother has one or two drinks casually but never gets drunk. In highschool I would get drunk with friends chilling and was a pot head. It wasn't until England that I learned to love beer and to love the whole club/drinking scene. So I fully believe I came to my drinking habits through experience, not learning. So I think there is a learned catalyst but your experience leads you to decide what you like or do. That said, I do believe that more than alcholic traits being passed down, you get the addictive personality. I think I probably have it from my dad, and thats why I try to watch what I do a bit. |

I think seeing your parents is just "a stepping stone" of what you are able to do. The rest is up to you. |

I think it could possibly be a "learned" thing. for me, i grew up around chain smokers. all three people i lived with -mom, dad, grandma, smoked for sure two packs a day. i remember how terrible it was for me when id be in the back seat of a car and i couldnt BREATH and i felt like i was going to puke but it was one of those cars that had no back windows so I just felt like I was going to die. So now, I never smoke and never will. and as for drinking, my father was an alocholic. he'd call me up drunk screaming at me telling me what an awful daughter i was and I was only about 9. Also, i was in the car when I saw him get the cuffs put on him for a DUI. They sent me back to my kindergarten school and I waited by myself with one worker lady because it was 8pm and the place was closed. also, my grandfather died of liver cancer from drinking, as did someone on my moms side of the family, so I know I have an addictive personality. So I try not to drink TOO heavily because it brings up bad memories, but certainly once in a while on holidays Ill go out and get smashed with my good friends. Sooo, thats me |

I think there is a genetic component to addiction, as in some people are more prone to addiction and have addictive personalities. Or in part it could be "learned" as Larisa says, if it was normal in your house it is normal to you. Some people can't just drink, they go to extremes. I'm not saying anyone here does that, I think you're all right in saying if it doesn't affect you or your life or your loved ones in a bad way then it is ok, just make sure you're being honest about it to yourself and make sure no one else does have a problem with it. Alcohol is a real problem in the uk, young people especially don't just go out for a few drinks and to have fun with mates, they go out to get blind drunk. Women put themselves at risk of rape and god knows what else, men get defensive and have to prove themselves and get into fights. I'm not sure why it is, why the UK has such a problem and the rest of Europe doesn't. I find it selfish when people get so drunk they have to rely on other people to get them home and make sure they get to bed ok and put them on their side in case they are sick in the night etc... Of course in your own home you're free to do what you want as long as you're not hurting anyone like I said before. Drinking alone...Rick used to do that, well I was in the house usually but he considered himself alone cos I didn't pay much attention to him then. I think this is when I realised he had a problem. The lengths he would go to to drink....like he'd take me out for a meal just because he could drink there, or he'd give me money to buy clothes at the shopping centre so he could spend half an hour in the pub they have there and in that time he'd drink as much as he could thinking I wouldn't know. Back to genetics, Rick's brother is certainly an alcoholic, his dad was but now he doesn't drink at all for health reasons, but his health has certainly suffered as a result of this. I don't think rick's genes made him do this, but I do think he has a personality that made him suceptable in the right circumstances. He has less harmful addictions now, like coffee and mints and working out! The thing that concerns me most about alcohol is the culture that surounds it, that all the fun, hip, cool people drink and they have such fun like you see in the adverts!!!! If you don't you're the one that's considered strange, and that's fine I know I am strange! My not drinking is a courtesy to Rick, there is never alcohol in our house. I would drink when I go out but normally I'm driving and in truth it doesn't bother me that much not to. I don't relish the taste of it, it does little for me! I certainly don't have less fun than if I did drink though! Plus no hangover! |
